Signals Given by Other Drivers

Drivers typically indicate their intention to turn by activating their indicators. Remember to deactivate your indicators after completing the turn to prevent confusion for other road users.

Keep in mind that another driver may have inadvertently left their indicator on. For instance, when emerging from a junction and a vehicle approaching from the right is indicating left, wait until the vehicle actually begins to turn before proceeding.

An arm signal can supplement or clarify the message conveyed by your indicators, particularly in heavy traffic situations, such as when signaling to turn right.

If you are slowing down and stopping shortly after a junction, delay signaling until you are passing the junction or just after it.

Police officers may use hand signals to direct traffic. It is important to be familiar with all hand signals and police signals in case you encounter them.

The horn is intended to alert others to your presence but must not be used between 11:30pm and 7am. When stationary, only use your horn if another vehicle is likely to pose a danger.

Flashing headlights should only be done to notify other road users of your presence.
