Safety in Tunnels

Before entering a tunnel, ensure to remove any sunglasses and activate dipped headlights. Maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front is crucial, especially in congested tunnel conditions.

Be vigilant for variable message signs indicating incidents or congestion within the tunnel.

In the event of a vehicle breakdown or incident in a tunnel:

  • Turn off the engine.
  • Activate hazard warning lights.
  • Proceed immediately to the nearest emergency telephone point to request assistance.

If your vehicle catches fire while driving through a tunnel, attempt to drive it out of the tunnel if it can be done safely and without creating additional hazards. If driving out of the tunnel is not feasible, follow these steps:

  • Bring the vehicle to a stop.
  • Activate hazard warning lights.
  • If the fire is small and manageable, attempt to extinguish it.
  • Immediately call for assistance at the nearest emergency point.
