Towing

If you passed your car driving test after January 1, 1997, you’re restricted to towing trailers with a maximum authorized mass (MAM) of up to 3,500 kg. For improved handling when towing a caravan, consider fitting a stabilizer to your tow bar, especially in windy conditions.

Ensure your caravan or trailer is equipped with a secondary coupling device, such as a chain or cable, to keep it connected to the towing vehicle in case the main coupling fails.

If your trailer or caravan starts to swerve or snake while driving, gently ease off the accelerator and gradually reduce your speed to regain control.

  • Remember, there’s a lower national speed limit for all vehicles towing trailers: 60 mph (96 km/h) on dual carriageways or motorways. Additionally, on motorways with more than two lanes in England, Scotland, and Wales, avoid driving in the right-hand lane.
  • On a single carriageway, the national speed limit for vehicles towing trailers is 50 mph (80 km/h).
